OCCA The Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics Partners with The Good Book Company on a New Book
CHARLOTTE, NC— One of the deepest and most difficult subjects apologists address is suffering. In Where Is God in All the Suffering? (The Good Book Company, September 2020), Dr. Amy Orr-Ewing enters the conversation with empathetic, easy-to-read, and powerful insights. Positioned as an evangelistic resource, this book is good for both unbelievers and believers alike.
Part of the popular Questioning Faith Series from OCCA the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, this book is the latest answering common objections to faith. Other topics in the series include Can Science Explain Everything?, Why Does God Care Who I Sleep With?, Am I Just My Brain? and Is Jesus History?.
Orr-Ewing’s approach to the book, she explains, aims to reach people in their trials. “Books on suffering written by academic types rarely connect with people who are actually suffering,” she says. “I work in Oxford, and I have had the opportunity of studying and teaching throughout my adult working life. In the course of that time, I have found myself drawn to thinking about and reflecting on some of the toughest questions of life. Through all of that, I have come to realize that if Christian faith is worth considering, it needs to be deep enough to cope with our most rigorous human scrutiny and our most heart-rending questions.”
Covering topics like, asking “why?” and where God is in anger, grief, mental illness, natural disasters, and more, Dr. Orr-Ewing addresses a breadth of challenges with depth and compassion. Os Guinness, author of Unspeakable, notes, “As deeply caring as she is wise, deep, and helpful, Amy Orr-Ewing has written for all who are suffering and in pain. She has been there herself, and she also knows the sure path to comfort, healing and faith. A book to be read slowly, and cherished — and shared with others who are in pain.”
As Guinness notes, this unique approach to one of the most common experiences and questions every person faces positions Where Is God in All the Suffering? as a book that can help both apologists and the individuals they are trying to reach with the gospel.
