The 2010 Korea Christian Rights Fair, jointly sponsored by ChristianTrade&nbspAssociation International and Korea Christian Publishers Association (KCPA), was held 6 &ndash 7 September in Seoul. &nbspAt the opening of the Fair, Kyung-ChulPark, president ofKCPA, delivered an urgent appeal seeking greater understanding of the Korean Christian market on the part of Christian publishers in the United States and other countries.
&nbsp
&ldquoCurrently KCPA has about 150 member publishers. Last year, Korean Christian publishers issued approximately 1,100 new titles,&rdquo said Park, noting that 38% of these were translations. However, &ldquothe number of publishers with more than 10 titles in 2009 was only 40, and the total published titles of the top 10 companies,&rdquo he added, comprise &ldquoalmost 60% of all titles sold.&rsquo
&nbsp
&ldquoThe total market volume of Christian publishing in Korea is&nbspabout 200 billion won (about 1.7 million US$). This is the third lowest number in the past 10 years and is less than 30% of&nbspthe market in 2007,&rdquo noted Park. &ldquoI sincerely request your consideration of our specific situation as you, American publishers and agencies and publishers from other countries, hope to interact with Korean publishers.&rdquo
&nbsp
Park recommended foreign publishers consider reductions in royalty advances, extensions of the translation and publishing periods, and more variations in licensing methods to help Korean publishers to introduce more translated Christian titles into the market.
&nbsp
&ldquoThis year&rsquos Korea Christian Rights Fair proved to be an interesting and enlightening experience for all involved,&rdquo says Kim Pettit, chief operating officer for ChristianTrade. &ldquoWe anticipate that next year&rsquos Korea Christian Rights Fair, which will most likely be held prior to the Beijing International Book Fair, will be even more successful. One reason for my optimism is that an understanding was reached during our time in Korea to combine the Seoul Licensing Fair sponsored by Hosung Maeng with the Korea Christian Rights Fair.&nbspBy working together we hope to provide a better event for buyers and sellers.&rdquo
