Harvest House Offers Tribute to Tim LaHaye
Dr. Tim LaHaye stood out as a remarkable and beloved author and friend to us at Harvest House Publishers. There were many qualities we came to appreciate about Tim as we partnered with him in ministry, with two of the most endearing being his great passion for making God’s Word as accessible as possible for all people, and his love for sharing the gospel with unbelievers.
Harvest House’s ties to Tim and his wife, Beverly, go back to the company’s earliest years. They were among the first authors acquired by Bob Hawkins Sr., who founded Harvest House in 1974. Tim’s first—and most widely published—book with Harvest House released in 1976, the bestseller How to Study the Bible for Yourself. It still remains in print today, and has been translated into 10 different languages. Beverly came out with her first Harvest House book in 1976 as well, The Spirit-Controlled Woman, which sold nearly 1,000,000 copies.
In both his teaching and writing, Tim took great joy in making God’s truth clear and practical. He had a gift for taking complex topics and making them easy to understand. So it’s no surprise that many of his books have enjoyed a long shelf life, including some that have remained in print 20, 30, and even 40 years.
Tim’s heartfelt concern for those who don’t know Christ as their Savior was clearly communicated in all his books. And frequently we had the privilege of seeing this love in action as he graciously initiated conversations with non-Christians in various settings. With compassion he would speak the truth in love, setting an example fellow believers could learn from. He spoke of Christ with a contagious enthusiasm, gaining the genuine interest of those who might otherwise be dismissive toward the gospel.
For the past 25-plus years, Tim’s energies had been devoted largely toward the subject of Bible prophecy. In 1992 he cofounded the Pre-Trib Study Group with Dr. Thomas Ice for the purpose of encouraging the research and teaching of biblical perspectives on Bible prophecy. Under Tim’s guidance, the group produced numerous resources that have had a far-reaching impact on helping to bring clarity to an area of Bible study that many have found complex or confusing.
While Tim is most known for his amazingly successful Left Behind novels published by Tyndale House Publishers, he also wrote 15 nonfiction books on Bible prophecy for Harvest House. One of his most popular is Charting the End Times, a book coauthored with Thomas Ice, which has sold 200,000+ copies.
Bob Hawkins Jr., president of Harvest House, states that “50 years ago…my father, Bob Hawkins Sr. had the privilege of acquiring Tim’s first book, Spirit-Controlled Temperament, while working at Tyndale House Publishers. That book launched Tim into a career of writing bestselling books that have sold nearly 100 million copies combined. His outreach and impact for Christ will be felt for generations. And it was his constant and intense love for the soon coming of Jesus, communicated in so many ways, that he’ll be recognized and remembered for the most. We will all greatly miss this committed man of faith, who is now resting in the arms of Jesus.”
In all that he did, Tim exemplified what it means to “press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me” (Philippians 3:12). He lived very much with eternity in mind, and has inspired countless others to do likewise.
