CBA President Curtis Riskey – Court Ruling May Affect Your Business

CBA Friend,

What if our government could control religious conversation to the point that if you owned a for-profit business, any reference to Jesus Christ or God could be banned? Or worse, our government required you to violate your Christian principles because of laws that political leaders might pass?

That is what is at stake in a U.S. Supreme Court case that will be heard on March 25. These examples have already occurred. You may not favor Hobby Lobby or its subsidiary Mardel Christian stores, but a ruling against this privately held company could set a precedent for how you do business as a Christian-product provider.

I believe CBA exists for such a time as this…

CBA is standing up for religious liberty so your for-profit business may continue to enjoy First Amendment rights now guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. CBA is the lead petitioner on a “friend of the court” brief that was submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court last week in support of the case against Hobby Lobby and Mardel. The Court also will hear simultaneously a case filed by Conestoga Wood Specialties, owned by a Mennonite family. The cases focus on the company owners’ pro-life stand against having to pay for “morning after” and “week after” birth-control drugs as required in the Affordable Care Act. These cases are about much more than birth control or pro-life values. If these companies lose, your freedom to operate your business under First Amendment protections could disappear.

CBA has joined with the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty and Michael McConnell of Kirkland & Ellis LLP, one of the nation’s top constitutional lawyers, to help inform the Supreme Court’s judges about the threat this case has to religious liberty. The brief argues that businesses have long been protected since before the founding of the nation, and forcing a company to violate religious principles would destroy constitutionally guaranteed protections.

CBA is working to support you and your ability to provide the broadest distribution possible of Christ-honoring products. We thank you for your membership and support for such a time as this.

Grace and Peace,

Curtis Riskey

pureHOPE Announces Leadership Transition as PRESIDENT Noel Bouché Takes Helm

pureHOPElogopureHOPE Announces Leadership Transition as

PRESIDENT Noel Bouché Takes Helm

Cincinnati, Ohio. (February 5, 2014) – While celebrating the organization’s 30th anniversary, pureHOPE  is honored to announce that new President Noel Bouché has assumed executive leadership of the ministry, succeeding Rick Schatz.  The handoff is the culmination of a planned three-year leadership transition strategy that has been lauded by outside observers.

Bouché joined pureHOPE in 2008, leaving a corporate law practice to help advance the ministry’s mission of providing Christian solutions in a sexualized culture. He spearheaded the organization’s rebranding, and led the development of unique programs and resources, like the pureJUSTICE college internship and Bible study resources that address the injustices of sex trafficking, pornography, and sexualized culture.

“Noel is an extremely qualified next-generation, visionary leader who is well-positioned to lead the ministry in the 21st century. I have the utmost confidence in Noel and his team to increase pureHOPE’s impact in the coming years”, said Schatz.

“It is a tremendous privilege to be invited to serve pureHOPE as President,” Bouché said. “This is an amazing organization with a rich history and a talented and passionate team.  God has given us a vision and mission that inspires and equips individuals, families, and churches in a relevant way for such a time as this.”

Bouché is based in pureHOPE’s Dallas office in the Hope Center, a first-of-its-kind, nine-acre campus that houses over forty Christian ministries.

Schatz will continue to work part-time out of pureHOPE’s Cincinnati office as Ministry Advancement Specialist, developing strategic partnerships, advising, teaching and equipping.  “Rick has provided outstanding leadership to pureHOPE over the past thirteen years, and we are extremely blessed that he will continue to contribute his wisdom and insight to our mission,” said Bouché.

The ministry of pureHOPE (founded in 1983 as the National Coalition Against Pornography) has never been more vital, given the sexualized culture in which we all live that attacks the wholeness of individuals, families, and communities.  Sadly, the church is not immune.  It is estimated that 50% of Christian men and over 20% of Christian women struggle with pornography and the majority of pastors say it is the most damaging issue in their church.  Moreover, 70% of mainline Protestant churches never or seldom discuss issues of sexual ethics and The American Academy of Pediatrics estimates that less than 15% of parents discuss human sexuality with their children.

pureHOPE partners with Christian schools and churches to equip individuals and families to lead pure lives of prayer, understanding, resolve, and engagement that exhibit the love, purity, and justice of God.  The organization produces resources and special events in three uniquely connected ministry spaces: Parenting (equipping parents to parent in a sexualized and technology-driven culture), Justice (exposing the connections between sex trafficking, pornography, and sexualized culture and linking the virtues of purity and justice), and Recovery (providing people with tools, understanding, and relationships to find healing from sexual brokenness).

Bouché and his team are moving forward with bold plans to greatly multiply pureHOPE’s impact, reaching people across the country and around the world with high-quality and innovative content and equipping resources,. These resources complement pureHOPE’s in-person ministry events and are meant to help cultivate a culture within churches, schools, and families that actively embraces God’s design for sexuality and the pursuit of purity and justice in a sexualized age.

About pureHOPE

pureHOPE pursues a world free of sexual exploitation and brokenness by providing Christian solutions in a sexualized culture. Our content, resources, and equipping events help people live out Jesus’ love, purity, and justice in this pornified society. pureHOPE partners with churches, Christian schools, campus ministries, and partner organizations in three ministry areas: parenting, justice and recovery.

Project Inspired Hosts Modesty Round Table

Four Christian Influencers Give New Perspectives on Modesty

Los Angeles, CA  (February 4, 2014)– Since it’s inception, has been a defining compass for guiding young women as they mature into wise, Godly women. Continuing their goal to encourage discussion on culture and Christianity, today the site is launching the first in a series that will explore hot topics among youth today, kicking off with views from four Christian influencers on the subject of modesty.  The round table discussion can be found here:

Project Inspired round table discussions are hosted by Zach Hunter and are designed to spur conversation and help teens think critically about issues facing them each day. Modesty is a hot-button issue for Project Inspired readers. Through the diverse perspectives of the four modesty panel participants (two men and two women), the site hopes this content inspires readers to debate and explore the complexity that surrounds modesty.  Zach created a short video describing the concept here:

Zach Hunter is a 22 year-old anti-slavery activist and author who has been vocal in the ideas of modesty and chivalry.  Joining him on the panel are Kim Hall, the Director of Women’s Ministry at All Saints PCA, Jarrid Wilson, pastor and author of the book 30 Words, and Tara Teng, Human Rights Activist and Miss World Canada 2012.  This collection of influencers has varied thoughts and visions on the topic, discussing the issue from angles of gender, fashion and culture.

Sample quotes from this round table include:

“If guys practiced self-control, ‘modesty’ wouldn’t be such a huge deal.” – Zach Hunter

“So much of the world believes a girl’s life to be worth less than her brother’s.  How impossibly high the cultural standards are for these women.  Even so, our own Western culture regularly waters the same poisonous seed:  boys will be boys, and it is the girl’s responsibility to keep herself out of the mud.  It’s a lie.” – Kim Hall

“Anyone can buy skimpy clothes and show some skin.  The real world changers are the ones who realize they don’t need to dress the way culture tells them to.” – Jarrid Wilson

“While modesty certainly can be a good thing, I believe that the freedom to express oneself through fashion belongs to each person and it takes a level of maturity to discern how it is best for you to dress.” – Tara Teng

Project Inspired has attracted a unique community of young women who are actively participating in the conversation on how to live their lives as beautiful women of God.  With a highly engaged audience of nearly 21,000 members, 110,000 Facebook friends and 140,000 monthly site visits, Project Inspired Girls participate in Girl Talk chats, video chats and create content for the website. These round table discussions are inspired by issues and concerns the site participants face on a daily basis.

About Project Inspired was created in 2011 to show young girls how to be their own best self ( The site examines faith, relationships, fashion, role models, culture and true beauty, all in a safe, caring and positive environment.  Founder Nicole Weider draws from her own experiences to make the message clear: Be a person of value and confidence through leading a true Christian life. was created with Mind Over Media, L.L.C., a full-service, cross-platform content development and media packaging company.

Marketing Tip: Growing Your Company Page on LinkedIn

Once you’ve set up your company page on LinkedIn (read more about how to do this here), you can do more than just be a stagnant presence on the social network. Proactively take steps to make sure you, and your company, get noticed and get your customers engaged. Here’s how to expand your reach and use LinkedIn Company Pages for all they are worth. It’s easier than it sounds, we promise!

Create: Fill out all the appropriate information. The more info you provide, the easier it will be for current and future customers or affiliates to find you. Categorize your provided services and highlights in the sections marked “products or services”.  Here’s a great tip: you can embed a YouTube video on the page to add life and color to your brand, enhancing what would otherwise be only text.

Delegate: Much like Facebook, LinkedIn allows you to choose which employees/admins you can assign activities to such as postings, content creation, etc. Help them help you by giving your team applicable privileges on your page. Brainstorm together to create content calendars and schedules so the burden of keeping the page current doesn’t fall to just one person. Great ideas for status updates include giveaways or fun statistics about the company (such as “We just hit 125 followers! Thanks for the support!”), etc.

Be choosy: Yep, we said it. Unlike Twitter and Facebook, having a bunch of fans does nothing for your page on LinkedIn unless they are relevant and somehow able to connect to you on a networking level. On the LinkedIn company page guide, it strongly advises encouraging your existing employees to join the company page. Posting your link on your other existing social media pages is also a great way to garner followers who already care about your company, as is following other companies who are similar to gauge their customer base.

Dig into your pocketbook: Though much of LinkedIn is free (we love free!), there are additional paid services offered, and they are actually worthwhile. Using LinkedIn’s sponsored posts and advertisements can be extremely helpful to promote your company to a level that you may not be able to accomplish otherwise. It’s important to track your reach and audience for approximately three months before investing money into advertising, so you can see a little bit of growth.  If you have no audience (follow your analytics  on LinkedIn Company pages), then there is no point in paying to influence them. Once you have a steady following, use the sponsored posts and advertising features to promote specials (like an exclusive product or book), or to introduce a new artist or author. It can be a great jumpstart for a new item or personality.

Be “findable”: Placing the “follow” button on your company blog and website is a great way to gather more followers (and more relevant ones, which equals less random, faceless folks). Also, do your own research to evaluate how your company can be more successful on LinkedIn. Remember, each company and brand is different, and has unique needs. You can read LinkedIn’s marketing research here to find out more!

Remember that FrontGate is your one-stop-shop for Christian advertising and marketing help to reach the faith-based market, including via social media! See more about our faith-based social media services here.

Marketing Tip: Beginning Your Company Page on LinkedIn

logo-linkedinWhile LinkedIn is useful for individuals to help launch their personal resumes and experience (you can read our top tips for LinkedIn newbies here!), it is also an extremely efficient tool for Christian non-profit organizations, businesses, and brands. By building a personal page as well as a business page, you can double your reach. If you’re a faith-based brand, here’s how to get started!

How to set up a LinkedIn company page?

You’ll have to set up your personal page first, using your real information, of course, then you can go to your interests and click “Create a Company Page”. You’ll have to provide a work email address. On the website, it also notes that once you click submit, there is no preview, so make sure you double and triple check the information you provide before you submit it because it will go live immediately. To set up your LinkedIn company page start here.

Key things to remember as you set up your page are: 1) select the best category (this will make sure people can find you quickly and effectively), 2) upload a clear, quality logo image, and 3) give an accurate description that reads normally. LinkedIn readers will see pretty quickly through a description that is poorly written and overloaded with buzz words like the old and failed search engine tactic.

Once you have a company page…

Though we all know this, it is still so easy to stray from it if we’ve been using social media for any length of time: the key to being effective is being consistent and posting quality, engaging content versus just posting information overload! With LinkedIn, you’ll want to expand your networks as well. Some tips for doing this include:

- Define your company’s mission and use those keywords throughout your postings.

- Maintain a consistent tone throughout your postings, just as you would on other social media outlets.  If your tone is fun and casual, make sure it matches across all fronts.

- Get your employees involved: doing “behind the scenes” content of what it’s like to work at your company is a fun way to engage your readers, as well as make it appealing for future employees.

- Remind your loyal customers that they can leave you a recommendation. Nothing reaches further than personal experience!

- Use brand-specific colors and phrases. Make sure your branding comes through in your postings, and add in videos or pictures for any content that is more than just words.

In our next blog, we will discuss how to create and participate in LinkedIn Groups, and how to use them to propel your brand forward.
