We had our first planning meeting for the 2012 Biola Media Conference yesterday.  I am VERY excited about the theme “Shattered – Cracking the Creative Code!”

We’re going to look at creativity and artistry in every area of film, tv, and digital media from the creative process itself to creativity in marketing, financing, distribution, and more. What records have been shattered? What boundries have been broken? What paradigms have been changed? What is working? It will be a celebration of creativity and the creative process in every way.

For those who don’t know, the Biola Media Conference is the largest event in the nation for people of faith working in the entertainment industry. The event is known for its intimate and practical conversations with Hollywood leaders, and professional training and instruction from some of the most influential individuals in Film, TV, PR, Media Marketing, Management and Digital Media.

Last year’s event was anchored by general sessions from Wired Co-founder Kevin Kelly, Columbia Pictures’ VP DeVon Franklin, AMC’s SVP Tom Halleen and Actor/Director/Producer Sean Astin, along with more than 15 workshops from other leaders in film, television, and digital media.

The program at this event is overwhelmingly excellent every year. I can say that because I don’t handle that part!   I don’t think it can get any better than these last 3 years.

From 2011, my favorite experiences included…

  • The very practical futurist comments from Kevin Kelly
  • Our first ever presentation on digital effects by Tim Naylor (Visual Effects and Senior Rigging Technical Director for Digital Domain, Creature Technical Director on Rango for Industrial Light & Magic, Creature Supervisor on Transformers) and ScottSmith (CTO of Slash VFX who shares an Academy Award with his Industrial Light and Magic visual effects team for his work on Pirates of the Caribbean 2, Dead Man’s Chest)
  • The wonderful combination of business savvy and spirituality that is DeVon Franklin
  • My geeked out moment chatting with Sean Astin.  (Thanks to Nathan Morgan for all his work to shoot the 2011 event, including the pic here. )

Biola Media Conference 2012 will take place on May 5th, 2012 at CBS Studio Center in Hollywood.
