The Book Industry Study Group (BISG) and Digital Book World (DBW) are pleased to present a special 4-part Webcast Series focusing on the EPUB standard format for reflowable digital publications.

EPUB defines a means of representing, packaging and encoding structured and semantically enhanced Web content for distribution in a single-file format. This BISG/DBW EPUB Webcast Series will focus on the new EPUB 3.0 spec, approved by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) membership as the final Recommended Specification in October 2011.

This Webcast Series will be conducted in four separate sessions. See below for more information about each session.

Introducing EPUB 3.0:
Getting Under the Hood of the New EPUB 3.0 Spec

Tues, Feb 21, 2012 from 1pm to 2pm Eastern

During this kick-off session, key members of the EPUB 3 Working Group will describe the major changes in the new EPUB 3.0 spec. Among other things, registrants will explore the new tags that allow for JavaScript, better linking, embedded PDFs, MathML, and greater support for CSS 3.

Working with EPUB 3.0:
How EPUB 3.0 Will Affect Your Workflow

Tues, Feb 28, 2012 from 1pm to 2pm Eastern

EPUB 3.0 opens new opportunities for publishers to present content digitally, but it also comes with a few headaches. With multiple retailers offering differing support for and rendering of EPUB 3.0, there are several major issues to look out for when creating new titles. During this session, registrants will learn clever fallbacks and workarounds that will ensure titles look their best in front of the greatest number of readers.

An Alternative to EPUB 3.0:
Inside the New Kindle Format 8 (KF8)

Tues, March 6, 2012 from 1pm to 2pm Eastern

Coming out at roughly the same time as EPUB 3, the new Kindle Format 8 (KF8) is supposed to make e-book developers lives easier with greater support for HTML5 and CSS3. This session will showcase major changes to the Kindle Format, including better support for fixed layout, nested tables, sidebars and more.

EPUB 3.0 in Action:
Case Study Presented by Kaplan Publishing

Tues, March 13, 2012 from 1pm to 2pm Eastern

In July 2011, a group of BISG members with specific levels of expertise were tapped to consult on a new pilot project from Kaplan Publishing involving the real-world implementation of EPUB 3.0. During this session, representatives from Kaplan and BISG will share final results from the pilot project.
