{New York, NY & Nashville, TN} Former Vice Presidential Candidate and Senator Joe Lieberman will publish GIFT OF REST with Howard Books, a division of Simon & Schuster. The new book, set to release in August 2011, offers a look at the beauty of the Sabbath observance – a practice that has anchored, ordered, and inspired Senator Lieberman’s life. Co-written with David Klinghoffer, Senator Lieberman shows how ceasing all activity, including work, for a weekly Sabbath observance has profound benefit—including health, relational, and even career advancement—for people of all religions.

“I know some people will think it is unusual for a United States senator to write a book about a religious subject like the Sabbath, and no less unusual for a Jew to write about such a topic for an audience of Christians and other faiths as well as Jews. I have done so because of all the Sabbath has meant to me as a person and as a senator. Its rest is a gift from God that I want to share with readers of all faiths and a gift I hope you will accept” – Senator Joe Lieberman.

Senator Joe Lieberman, as an observant Jew, learned the practice of the Sabbath from his parents who, in turn, received it from their parents, who received it from generations of Jews before them. In the past century, the Sabbath has fallen on hard times. It is thought of as just another day or as a time to squeeze in some extra errands or recreation that you may have missed during the workweek. The weekend passes in a blur of often meaningless activity. This book is meant to inspire putting the real meaning of the Sabbath back into practice.

Howard Books is thrilled to partner with Senator Lieberman on this project. We know this will be a book that not only inspires a broad range of people who practice a broad range of religions, but will change lives.” – Jonathan Merkh; VP and Publisher of Howard Books; a division of Simon & Schuster.

Combining personal and political memoir with history and broadly informed religious reflection, this book is a practical how-to guide, with simple suggestions for introducing the Sabbath into your own life.It will be a very personal book, yet also one animated by profound reflections on history and larger social trends.

Joe Lieberman is a United States senator representing Connecticut. As the 2000 Democratic vice presidential candidate, he became the first Jew in American history to run for national office on a major-party ticket.
