New York, New York (September 28, 2010) – Today, the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) announced that the groundbreaking research survey Consumer Attitudes Toward E-Book Reading, launched in August 2009, will be funded for two more years. Powered by Bowker’s PubTrack™ Consumer, Consumer Attitudes Toward E-Book Reading will continue to explore the buying and usage habits of print book consumers who have acquired an e-book or a dedicated e-reader within the past 18 months.

The new 2010–2011 cycle of Consumer Attitudes Toward E-Book Reading is being sponsored by Champion Sponsor Direct Brands, with additional sponsorship by HarperCollins Publishers, Levy Home Entertainment and Publishing Technology. Additional sponsorships are available. Email Angela Bole at angela@bisg.org for more information.

“BISG is pleased to extend this vital work,” said BISG Executive Director Scott Lubeck. “By employing collective industry resources, this study is providing a baseline for understanding what we need to know about the new book consumer, now and in the future.”

BISG’s Consumer Attitudes Toward E-Book Reading is comprised of quarterly in-depth studies of 750 print book consumers who say they have acquired an e-book or dedicated e-reading device within the last 18 months. By expanding on work from the previous year, the 2010–2011 and 2011-2012 cycles will provide definitive trend lines explaining how print book consumers’ use of e-books is changing over time. Sponsors of both cycles can submit proprietary questions to supplement the collective findings.

“E-books represent one of the biggest shifts in reading habits in the history of modern publishing,” said Kelly Gallagher, Vice President of Publishing Services for Bowker.  “We’re taking a collaborative approach with our industry colleagues to study these book consumers’ habits, attitudes and spending which is essential for effective, strategic business planning and decision-making.”

The quarterly survey data will be available in PDF summary reports that include editorial content with expert insight and industry interviews explaining how trends are impacting the market now and in the future. Further, the data will also be available online in near real-time via the unique, interactive Real-Time Reporting web-based software.
