Nashville, TN—June 4, 2010—Howard Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, announced that it will publish a new book in August 2010 by renowned collegiate football coach Bobby Bowden. Titled Called to Coach, the book will be co-authored with Mark Schlabach, an award-winning national college football columnist for ESPN.
Becky Nesbitt, Vice President and Editor-in-Chief for Howard Books, who acquired world rights for the title said, “This book will give readers an inside look at the path that led Bobby Bowden to become one of college football’s most successful coaches and the patriarch of college football’s most famous coaching family. Coach Bowden reveals never-before-published details of his life on and off the field, his faith, his recent retirement, and much more.”
Bobby Bowden is the second-winningest coach in the history of major college football. In his thirty-four years as the head coach at Florida State University he won two national championships, finished in the top five in the nation for 14 straight seasons, led the Seminoles to 28-straight Bowl Games, and won 76% of his games. Additionally, Coach Bowden had an all-time career winning percentage of over 74%—all remarkable feats unparalleled in collegiate sports.
Also remarkable is the incredible coaching legacy Bowden shares with his sons. Coach Bowden, his son Terry, and his son Tommy all had undefeated seasons as head coaches in Division IA college football; and all in the same decade, the 1990’s (Terry in 1993 at Auburn University, Tommy in 1998 at Tulane University, and Bobby in1999 at FSU). Called to Coach will reveal the man behind the legendary coach and the incredible life lessons that have inspired so many.
The deal was negotiated with Frank Scatoni at Venture Literary. A major national publicity campaign will launch the book in August during preview coverage of the college football season. An engaging speaker, Bowden is constantly in demand and most free evenings will find him on the speaking circuit.
