Dallas/Ft. Worth, TXThis week the Christy Advisory Board announced nominees in nine categories for the 2010 Christy Awards.  Publisher David C Cook received nominations in two categories from the award dedicated to recognizing excellence in Christian fiction by contemporary authors.  The Christy Awards will be conferred in advance of the International Christian Retail Show at a ceremony at the Renaissance St. Louis Grand Hotel on Saturday, June 26, 2010, at 7:30 p.m.

Every year, the Christy Award invites publishers to submit novels written from a Christian worldview and copyrighted in the year preceding the awards.  Each novel is entered in one of several genre categories and/or the first novel category.  The novels are then read and evaluated against a ten-point criteria by a panel of seven judges composed of librarians, reviewers, academicians, literary critics, and other qualified readers, none of whom have a direct affiliation with a publishing company.

This week, David C Cook, a leading discipleship resource provider, was recognized with Christy Award nominations for two of its novels:

Scared by Tom Davis (nominated in the First Novel category) is a sweeping, international saga that explores many of today’s vital social issues such as poverty, war, disease, and AIDS.  Delving into the lives of a heartbroken photojournalist struggling to redeem his past and an African orphan fighting for survival, Davis offers a unique perspective on the tragedies taking place in Africa today and encourages readers to step out and help the “least of these.”

The Blue Umbrella by Mike Mason (nominated in the Young Adult category) is a page-turning fantasy novel that probes the depths of good and evil.  When Zac Sparks’s mother dies, he’s sent to live with his cruel old Aunties, who are in league with an evil magician who steals the youth of children—and the only person who can help Zac just might be his mother’s murderer.  This first offering in Mason’s series for 9 to 12 year olds is a superbly written children’s story with deep spiritual resonance.

“What a delight to see two debut novelists acknowledged in this list,” states Don Pape, publisher of trade books and study resources for David C Cook.  “That alone is recognition of the talent Tom Davis and Mike Mason bring to their stories.  It’s an honor for us at Cook to partner in these projects.  I’m particularly excited to see Scared nominated as Tom’s second novel, Priceless, will be releasing in June.”
