BLOOMINGTON, Minn.—Summerside Press™ is pleased to reintroduce the works of one of the most remarkable Christian leaders you’ve never heard of. In an exclusive agreement with Abingdon Press, Summerside Press™ is re-releasing the lost classic devotional works of E. Stanley Jones. An incredibly effective voice from the recent past, Jones’s work is as fresh, relevant, and needed today as it was 70 years ago. Edited and updated for the 21st Century by Dean Merrill, Victorious Living is the premiere release in Summerside’s “ESJ Devotional” series.
E. Stanley Jones (1884-1973) was an ordinary man with an extraordinary mission. He was a Methodist missionary to India during the colonial period, and in 1938, Time magazine called him “the world’s greatest Christian missionary.” He was ahead of his time in making the gospel real and compelling, not dull and institutional. He spoke some 60,000 times (perhaps a world record) to audiences that often included Hindus and Muslims. Jones was a friend of Mahatma Gandhi (even when they disagreed) and effectively promoted peace, justice, and racial harmony. A world-class statesman, he advised U.S. presidents and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962 for almost preventing the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The next year he received the Gandhi Peace Prize. Jones wrote 28 books, some of which were million-copy bestsellers, and in the wake of their success, spoke to crowds of 5,000–8,000 in arenas across America.
Not your typical devotional, Victorious Living will challenge readers’ assumptions and stretch their souls. The powerful daily readings are woven around one theme—victorious living—and are intended for personal, group, and family devotions. Jones gathered the weekly readings into groups of seven so they could be used as study books for weekly Bible classes. In a marked difference from other devotionals, he arranged the subject matter as a continuous whole so that it could also be read as an ordinary book. The readings do not always end with a tidy conclusion, but rather draw readers deeper and further into spiritual understanding over a period of time.
