“Spread Love in Kenya.” That is the theme of the campaign carried out by Arba Publications, a Nairobi-based member of ChristianTrade Association Kenya. The goal of the campaign is to prepare the Church for the country’s upcoming elections.
Almost five years ago, post-election violence in Kenya almost plunged the country into civil war. The violence lasted two months. During that time, per BBC News reports, 1,500 people were killed and 250,000 displaced. The next elections are scheduled for March 2013.
“We need the prayers, goodwill and support of ChristianTrade members worldwide as we carry out the “Spread Love in Kenya” campaign,” says Martin Karanja, Arba’s managing director. “This initiative is geared to ensuring that Christians in Kenya practice the greatest commandment so that we never have a repeat of what happened in 2007 and 2008.”
The campaign is designed around Love: the Christian Signature, an Arba title released in 2011, as well as a seven-minute DVD. The book by Edward Buri–a Princeton graduate, youth pastor and adjunct professor–has sold more than 6,000 copies and is currently in its third printing.
Working with churches, retailers, and schools, Karanja has organized events in a dozen key cities in Kenya, including Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru and Naivasha. The campaign has reached more than 50,000 people have been reached via radio, TV, print, and public events. The campaign has even crossed national borders: the most recent public meeting was in Kampala, Uganda.
“We are now raising funds to sponsor copies to be distributed to every member of Kenya’s parliament, “ says Karanja. “No more clashes… ever.” That’s the result the publisher hopes for as he works with the March 2013 elections in view.
This visionary is not alone. “We have nineteen active members,” says Jackie Ojiambo, owner of Wells Books and Gifts and the chair of ChristianTrade Association Kenya. “We meet to pray, fellowship, encourage one another, and address issues that affect our industry and nation.”
