The 2012 edition of Marketsquare Brazil was held May 3-4 as part of the first international Christian book fair, or FLIC (Feira Internacional do Livro Cristao), organized by ASEC (Associao de Editores Cristaos), the Christian publishers association in Brazil. It featured exhibitors representing companies from the U.S., Denmark, Poland, South Africa and other countries seeking to do business with Brazilian Christian publishers and distributors. The event was the third meeting organized to facilitate book licensing and translation contracts.

On Tuesday, May 3rd, publisher Sergio Henrique de Lima of Editora Vida provided a brief overview of the Brazilian Christian market for exhibitors. Evangelicals are about 30% of the population of Brazil, according to government statistics, and they read about seven books per year, double the national average. ASEC, which has more than 80 members among the estimated 120 companies that publish religious books in Brazil, estimates that ASEC publishers achieve sales of 548 million reais, or nearly US$270 million, per year.

On Wednesday, May 4th, Marketsquare Brazil exhibitors were invited to attend the Premio Aret? 2012 dinner, where awards were given to Christian books and Bibles in 30 categories, including 14 that specifically focused on books of foreign origin. Vida and Hagnos received the most awards, and five other publishing houses received three awards each. The foreign publishing houses whose books received most recognition were Zondervan and InterVarsity Press.

Discussions for next year are already underway, reports Kim Pettit, executive director of ChristianTrade Association International. Sinval Filho notes that ASEC expects to conduct a survey of its membership later this year, and that international cooperation is a key issue for Brazilian Christian publishers. Pettit adds that Brazil will be the Guest of Honor at the 2013 Frankfurt International Book Fair.

Next on ChristianTrade’s agenda is the Marketsquare International at CBA’s International Christian Retail Show in Orlando July 15-18, 2012, followed by Marketsquare Asia, to be held in Singapore September 2-4, 2012.
