Faith-based media and marketing

Story Is Still Everything, and Lucas and Spielberg Are Also Right

spielberg_lucasI just read an article in Variety about a panel hosted by the USC School of Cinematic Arts. It’s a must read based for those of us working in faith-based entertainment, and in Christian ministry or for-profit communication.

This isn’t just about faith-friendly or faith-based entertainment.  The summary concept at the end really applies to everything we do to communicate, from the content we create into products or outreaches, right down to the promotions and ads we create to draw people to them.

In the article,  George Lucas & Steven Spielberg have stated that the major film studios will implode, perhaps on a massive scale.  Evidently the movie theater industry is going to turn into a Broadway-like model.

Creating content for niche audiences to be served up by VOD (video on demand) is the very certain future.  I know our FrontGate family member ChristianCinema.com is excited to hear that.

This just continues to confirm that the small screen (your phone or tablet) and of course your television are only increasing in importance as content delivery devices.  Those of us in faith-based entertainment already know that, and our brothers and sisters in ministry are catching up with us now.  We will soon be posting a Nielsen graphic about television usage in our Facebook and Twitter streams that summarizes an interesting report on similar topics.

Lucas asked a key question that my friends in Christian film are already asking themselves, “Do you want people to see it, or do you want people to see it on a big screen?  I think that applies almost as well to the Christian television world.

At FrontGate as just one part of all that we do, we work on just about every one of the films and television programs that seek to draw in the Christian audience.  More and more, we are seeing Christian films target their theatrical to concentrate on only core areas, and then focus more on the post-theatrical distribution channels.

Of course, timing is everything when it comes to technological and distribution changes like the ones Lucas and Spielberg have stated with such certainty, but the very best part of the article for me was the last paragraph.

Doonby

Don Mattrick of Microsoft was also on the panel, and his contribution to the discussion was evidently overshadowed by the two big filmmakers.  However, what he said was my favorite part, “You still have to tell stories. Some people will want to be in a (video) game… and some people will want to have a story told to them. Those are two different things. But the content always stays the same. The content hasn’t changed in 10,000 years.”

Ultimately, those of us in the Christian ministry and for profit entertainment worlds have the single best story to be told, along with a ton of other outstanding stories already written in the Bible… and we’re getting better and better at telling them.  I hope that we’re also getting better and better at weaving Christian themes into “normal” stories.  As examples, we’ll have to see what you think about Grace Unplugged (October) and Doonby (November 1st.)

As faith-based communicators who are creating film, television, and webisodes, but also as Christian marketers creating direct email ads, banner ads, video spots, landing pages, apps, and more; we should be asking ourselves, “Are we creating something people want to see?”  Let this serve as a little reminder from me that “Available Now” doesn’t cut it.  You can quote me on that.

FrontGate’s Engagement Team will be attending Variety’s PURPOSE: Family Entertainment + Faith Based Summit on June 21st.  If you’ll be there, we’ll have to connect.

What do you think? Are Christian films getting better at storytelling?  What’s your favorite Christian film so far?

FrontGate Event Network’s Marketing Guide to Christian Summer Festivals

SWC_stageKey Summer Festivals have always been part of FrontGate’s Christian Event Network because of the tremendous value they provide to marketers in connecting to a captive, faith-based audience for one, two or three days in a row, delivering excellent user acquisition and message frequency to make sure your brand is seen and heard!

In particular, JumboTron ads on the massive screens at these events continue to be one of the best values in all of Christian marketing.

For those who are first-time festival sponsors, or if you’ve been frustrated with your past marketing efforts at events, FrontGate offers our 2013 festival sponsorship clients a FREE 1 hour consulting session on “How to Make Events Work For You” providing you with our tips, knowledge, and experience from 12 years of marketing through live events. Order a sponsorship package through FrontGate, and the consultation is free.

For FrontGate’s June 2013 Offer of the Month, we are making this same session  available for only $275 to anyone who is not a 2013 festival sponsor.

Here’s a KEY TIP for marketing at festivals and other Christian events: many marketers make the mistake of designing their festival campaign (onsite visuals around the grounds, engagement stunts, program ads, attendee emails, exhibit booth, etc.)  to present themselves based on the information they want to promote.  That is the wrong place to start.

Instead, you should start by designing your promotion or your onsite presence from the  point of view of the event attendee. What do they want? How can I engage them? What will be of value to them? What will benefit them?  As marketers, we should almost always seek to engage rather than inform. Start from the attendees’ point of view, and you will have a much more effective marketing experience.

Not that you have to have an exhibit booth in order to be successful at an event – NOT AT ALL, but if you do have a booth, just making a standee backdrop and then having a volunteer sit at your table reading a book until they get asked a question is an opportunity sorely missed.  Please don’t let that happen!

I’ve gone to events and slowly crept closer and closer to the booth to see how long it takes the exhibitor’s team member to look up.  I have also been know to call, text or email marketing directors who are friends at various Christian companies and ministries with pictures of or info about their booth to let them know.

Put your product, brand or service in front of tens of thousands of Christian consumers at one of this year’s festivals!

Here are four key fests, part of FrontGate’s Christian Event Network, that most marketers targeting the faith-based audience should be involved with…

5 Tips for Creating Winning Banner Ads

While the art of high click-through rates and impressions is not a perfect science when it comes to online advertising, there are a number of things marketers seeking the faith-based audience can do to ensure their banner ads garner the optimal number of click-throughs and impressions. Here are five ways to make your online banner ads stand out from the crowd:

1. Write an attention-grabbing headline. Let’s state the obvious: banner ads don’t allow for lengthy headlines or large graphics. Recent studies have shown that static banners are more effective than animated banners, simply because they aren’t as distracting. While this trick of the trade may be helpful to keep in mind, static banners give marketers even less room to communicate their message. That’s why it’s important to make every word count. Your headline needs to be creative, succinct and to the point.  Here is an example of a 728×90 ad (reduced in size to fit your screen.)

2. Make sure all words are in large, readable fonts. Again, this is tricky because space is an issue, but it’s important to increase the size of your font as much as possible. Fancy fonts may be artistic, but if your words aren’t readable, your banners won’t be effective. Remember, your banner ads are normally surrounded by thousands of other words and images vying for readers’ attention on one page. So, make sure your words stand out.

3. Aim for a clean, sleek design. It’s important for marketers to work with their designers to make sure all of their ads stay on-brand for a single product. Banner ads should reflect the brand of the product as all of your ads should, no matter the medium. Designers can bring in consistent colors, fonts and design elements to make your banner ad instantly “pop” with familiarity and affiliation with your faith-based product or service. Make sure the design is clear, clean and clutter-free.

4. Use a hero shot of the product. Although limited real estate on banner ads forces you to make your product images small, it’s still important to make your product the hero of your ad. If it’s a service you’re promoting, be sure to include your logo or whatever image best represents your company and helps consumers form a lightning-fast association. The goal should be to tell an immediate story through your image.

5. Include a clear call to action. Give your reader a “next step.” Tell them explicitly what to do. ” Use phrases like Click hereSign Up and Download for Free and key words like discoverfind out and explore that drive people to action. It also doesn’t hurt to incentivize your ad. Offer a free chapter download of your author’s book, a complimentary download of a song from your artist’s latest album, or a coupon. Link to exclusive content, and provide a way for them to sign up to receive more info. (BTW –  this is a GREAT way for you to build your email list!)  Above all, don’t mince words. Tell them exactly what you want them to do.

Groundwire Spiritual Coaches Offer Immediate Help To People In Crisis

Groundwire

GROUNDWIRE SPIRITUAL COACHES OFFER IMMEDIATE HELP TO PEOPLE IN CRISIS

Ministry Opportunities for Additional Volunteers Available, From the Comfort of Your Own Home

Castle Rock, CO – Groundwire.net exists simply to bring immediate hope and encouragement to hurting people, any where, at any time. Hundreds of volunteers around the world make up Groundwire’s network, who are available around the clock to hear the needs of the hurting and vulnerable. As the Groundwire reach grows beyond their own site, more volunteers are needed to act as spiritual coaches, to help serve the multitude of people who seek counsel through their safe and anonymous platform.

Many current volunteers speak of how investing a few hours a week as a spiritual coach has changed their lives as well.

Tonnie states, “Coaching on Groundwire has given me an opportunity to get out of my ‘Christian bubble’, so-to-speak. I love connecting with people in the nitty-gritty discussions about real life issues, and helping them to make course corrections. Groundwire is a very unique and effective evangelistic and mentoring tool!”

Joni continues, “Groundwire has given me the ability to share the love of Christ and the hope that is found in Him with others all around the world. I can reach out from my home to those who are seeking the truth, and have the opportunity to pray for them and talk with them in hope of them finding the joy that I have found in Christ- the answer for all our struggles in life.”

Other radio networks and websites, such as I Am Second, Go Tandem and WayFM are served by Groundwire as well, supplying their interactive platform and staffed counselors to help meet these growing ministries’ needs as well. No matter how a hurting person reaches Groundwire, they are given a voice, a caring listener, and given a message of the love of Jesus. Many seek follow up information, and agree to participate in Groundwire’s “Next Steps” 21-day discipleship program.

Throughout the summer, Groundwire is actively pursuing teachable adults who passionately love Jesus, who are committed to the Great Commission and who possess a servant’s heart. With a simple commitment of 2-4 hours a week, Coaches help each person feel loved, by introducing them to Christ, by praying for the chatter, and helping connect them to a local church or resource and encourage them to take next steps. Coaches are able to work anywhere the choose, as long as they have reliable internet access.

To volunteer to be a Spiritual Coach, applicants must fill out an information sheet, successfully complete a background check, and go through an evaluation process. All who volunteer or work with Groundwire must also agree with the Groundwire Statement of Faith. Groundwire commits to training and mentoring for their coaches, as well as safety in their client discussions. More information can be found here – www.groundwire.net/coaching.

Groundwire was launched in 2003 as an outreach program of Champion Ministries on two secular stations in Denver, CO and Spokane, WA with radio spots that simply shared the hope, love and purpose of Christ. This model has evolved, with targeted ads currently heard on over 1,500 radio and TV stations (both Christian and secular), reaching a weekly audience of over 20 million. Hundreds of volunteers offer live coaching and encouragement 24 hours a day via www.groundwire.net, which averaged over 200,000 visits each month in 2012.

Champion Ministries d.b.a. Groundwire operates as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization.

Case Study – Actors, Models & Talent for Christ (AMTC)

amtcActors, Models & Talent for Christ (AMTC) is a movement to launch stars who are also role models in the entertainment industry. AMTC’s program includes education and a six-day conference that happens twice a year in Orlando, Florida.  AMTC serves as a bridge between performers who love God and career-making agents actively working in the entertainment industry.  Their success is evident from the roster of working talent involved with organization.

AMTC desired to increase their number of participants at 25-plus regional audition events all across the country. They selected FrontGate to expand awareness of and drive more talent to their audition events.

Why AMTC Uses FrontGate

“We were extremely impressed with the results we achieved through partnering with FrontGate. By tapping into FrontGate’s wide array of databases and by being able to specifically target particular regions of the country where we were needing greater participation for our auditions, we were able to collect a wide selection of incredible talent. Thanks to FrontGate, we were able to discover some of the best talent from across the country, and I can’t wait to see how God uses this group of talented actors, singers and models to change the world for His glory.”
–  Adam She, Executive Director AMTC

Target Audience

The target audience for the AMTC auditions were actors, models, singers, dancers and comedians who feel a calling from God to perform; people who want to perform, make a difference and be a light. Auditions were open for every talent level from beginners to professionals, ages 4-84.

Challenge

AMTC’s biggest challenge was obtaining a cross-section of talent from a variety of states. With offices in Georgia and Texas, AMTC needed a way to reach out to talent across the country in an efficient manner to promote auditions in specific areas for those wanting to pursue a career in the arts while glorifying God.

The FrontGate Campaign

FrontGate’s focused in via our ad network to deliver geo-targeted advertising for AMTC, while also writing and servicing  a national press release to draw broad attention through media outlets across the country.  AMTC  selected the 100,000 email annual volume discount package for direct email, which brought their cost down to only 5 cents per email. FrontGate has regional capabilities with our segmentable direct email database via iTickets.com, Human Events, and more, and through the geo-targeted banner advertising options in our ad network on ChristianCinema.comChristianGuitar.orgHearItFirst.com, iTickets.com, ProjectInspired.com, and Rapzilla.com, as well as Pay Per Click in the U.S. and globally across 196 countries in any language.

Results

By targeting direct email ads to Christians in 22 of the 25 key cities and the surrounding areas, AMTC received outstanding open rates well above industry averages on their direct email ads, driving awareness and attendance at these events. The star of the campaign proved to be the iTickets.com direct email database.

The average open rate across all 20+ sends was a very high 25%, with click thrus from opens at 4.6%.

FaithLauncher Joins FrontGate Web Network for Exclusive Representation of Crowdfunding Projects & Promotions

FaithLauncher Joins FrontGate Web Network for Exclusive Representation of Crowdfunding Projects & Promotions

“Crowdfunding isn’t a new way of investing, but how we see ourselves as participants and investors in companies. This year alone (2012), an estimated $3.2 billion dollars is expected to be raised through donation-based crowdfunding platforms.” – Forbes

Orange County, CA,– FrontGate, the leading faith-based, culture-engaged, media & marketing group, announced the addition of the new FaithLauncher crowdfunding community to their growing web network roster.

FaithLauncher is a faith-based community site empowering Christians everywhere to take action, build God’s Kingdom, and positively influence culture. It is a social crowdfunding platform solely dedicated to Christian inspired projects from entrepreneurs, ministries, filmmakers, musicians, artists, and more. The site was created for people to showcase their project, engage support, and achieve their funding goal.

With FaithLauncher, the faith community no longer has to wade through a sea of often undesirable projects and content in order to find and support projects that align with their core faith and family interests.

“FaithLauncher is the best choice in crowdfunding for Christians. Unlike other crowdfunding sites, FaithLauncher is aligned with Biblical values and permits all types of projects relevant to Christians. Even better, they let you use what you raise to move your project forward even if you don’t meet the targeted goal you set for yourself as you learn and experience the crowdfunding phenomenon. FaithLauncher is a safe place for the Christian church family to support one another.” – Scott A. Shuford, President, FrontGate

Because FaithLauncher understands that not everyone has experience with the relatively new crowdfunding model, project creators will receive 100% of what they raise in order to move their project forward even if they do not reach 100% of their funding goal. This allows project creators to gain experience and build community around their campaigns. FaithLauncher also allows charity, cause, and fund my life projects prohibited by other crowdfunding sites, providing people of faith with an outlet for these very important efforts. The site is the first and only platform that incorporates prayer, service, and volunteering opportunities into any project.

Project creators also have the opportunity to work with an expert, a FaithLauncher Coach, who will guide them from start to finish in order to increase their success.

Another offering unique to FaithLauncher, projects have no setup fees. Details for project creators on how they can utilize FaithLauncher opportunities can be found in the Media Kit at FrontGateMedia.com.

“The FaithLauncher team is very excited to join the FrontGate family of Christian media outlets! Our platform is well positioned to bring a more effective and relational approach to crowdfunding for the faith-based market. Our alliance with FrontGate allows us to significantly expand that value by providing Faithdoers with added tools to attract every kind of supporter they need. We’re confident in FrontGate’s aligned mission to empower the faith community’s excellent work with optimal resources.” – Fernando Chavez, Founder/CEO, FaithLauncher

“The crowdfunding industry is already growing rapidly…The growth in 2012 represents an acceleration, up from 64 percent growth in 2011. Looking ahead, growth is expected to reach $5.1 billion raised in 2013, representing an expected 89 percent increase in the dollars raised…” – Entrepreneur

“Top 10 Trends For 2013: Consumers will embrace even more ways to participate in the funding and (pre-)launch of new products and brands.”  – TrendWatching.com

“In terms of its compound annual growth rate (CAGR), the crowdfunding industry is growing at a rate of 63 percent in terms of the total amount of funds raised.”  – TechCrunch

Established in 2001, FrontGate (http://FrontGateMedia.com) is the leading culture-engaged media group & marketing service reaching the faith and family values audience which represents $4.6 billion worth of Christian products purchased by consumers annually according to USA Today, and the only media group founded for the purpose of marketing others’ projects rather than publishing content.  This foundational focus on marketing has made FrontGate a leader for innovation in delivering the faith-based audience.

The firm just received the 2013 Crystal Trophy as the “Best Faith-based Website” in the Internet Advertising Competition, and was also honored with two 2012 WebAwards receiving the Standard of Excellence in the Marketing and Faith-Based categories.

Serving as “Your Gateway To The Christian Audience,” FrontGate’s web network provides reach to more than 10 million people and 6 million email subscribers. NewReleaseTuesday.com Announces Massive Expansion Of Groundbreaking Online Radio Station, NRT Radio

NRT Radio

NewReleaseTuesday.com Announces Massive Expansion Of Groundbreaking Online Radio Station, NRT Radio

More than 140 new songs, expanded programming and “Rewind” selections, new electronic dance music show, iPad Mini contest — all part of massive re-launch.

BOISE, ID  – NewReleaseTuesday.com–the largest Christian music and entertainment destination online—announces the launch of a major overhaul of its official online-only radio station NRT Radio (http://www.NRTRadio.com) with all-new programming and special promotions.

Rolling out this Friday at 12:00 PM Noon Eastern time, listeners will instantly hear the difference, with more than 140 new songs from every musical genre added to NRT Radio’s more than 9-hour-long playlist.

NRT Radio reaches listeners in 118 countries who stream more than 15,000 total listening hours of music every month (TLH) with an average session length of 63 minutes. The station can be heard on http://NRTRadio.com, NewReleaseTuesday’s NRT Mobile and NRT Weekly apps, the TuneIn radio app, and iTunes, among other sources.

“While most radio stations are selectively adding three to five singles a month, and staying on hit songs for months at a time, NRT Radio has always been about delivering what’s new in Christian music,” said station program director and NewReleaseTuesday.com President Kevin McNeese. “The recent expansion of the station holds true to that calling.”

Since September 2010, NRT Radio has provided a unique listening experience found nowhere else online. The station combines all genres of Christian music with no repeats, no DJs, and no commercials.

In addition to the stable of fresh and emerging songs (and all-new station ID liners), NRT Radio has refreshed its “rewind” collection for the first time since its launch–featuring more than 300 songs that reach all the way back to 1995. A new rewind selection plays at random approximately every 45 minutes.

Finally, the station’s weekend lineup–featuring top-quality, nationally syndicated Christian shows–will expand with new programming and an extra broadcast hour starting at 7 p.m. Eastern on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The new programming includes SonRise, a two-hour hit music show broadcasting Saturdays from 7-9 p.m. Eastern, and a 6-hour block of worship on Sunday mornings.

Friday and Saturday nights are getting a significant octane boost as NewReleaseTuesday.com, in conjunction with DREAM Records, announces collaboration on the first hour-long syndicated Christian electronic dance music (CEDM) show hosted by David Thulin, titled The Reconstruction.

“The Reconstruction is the realization of a decade-long dream of bringing CEDM to the general public,” says Thulin.” This young and underground genre deserves to see the mainstream, and that is my mission.”

In celebration of this expansion, NRT Radio is running a contest now through the end of May that will allow listeners to unlock a secret code for a chance to win an iPad Mini. One number of a 10-digit code is given at random at the top of every hour. Everyone who breaks the code will get a free song download from David Thulin’s new hit remix album, Reconstruction.

“There are certainly listeners out there who appreciate knowing every song that comes on the radio,” said McNeese. “But we believe music education is sorely lacking in the Christian radio industry. There is simply a tidal wave of new music every quarter that goes virtually overlooked by traditional Christian radio. We’re excited to take on the responsibility of introducing fans to as much new Christian music as possible through NRT Radio, and we believe the listening experience will be unmatched.”
